Before any we resort to knee replacement surgery, we will always evaluate the contributing factors prior to an operation. For this, we will evaluate the use of existing treatments including painkillers in their day to day life, as well as physical engagements such as physiotherapy, regular exercises and knee arthroscopy. Often, we will only proceed with knee replacement if the x-ray shows ‘bone-on-bone’ osteoarthritis or the knee arthroscopy has revealed ‘bare bones’.
If we proceed with the total knee replacement, we will then look at either performing either a partial or total knee replacement. The main difference between the two surgeries is the damage that will be administered to the cruciate ligaments. For a partial replacement, the ligaments must remain intact and functioning in order for the knee to restore to a normal moving pattern. This differentiates compared to a total replacement, where the ligaments will likely be sacrificed due to the nature of the surgery required.
Although we would love to offer knee replacement surgery to everyone that required the operation, we will first confer with the patient and gather various details that will enable us to decide whether the surgery is worthwhile. This is because knee surgery requires a lot of dedication, time and effort, especially during the treatment phase, where we will need them to be active and participate in their treatments. If they fail to do so, the chances of stiff joints and irreversible results are likely, which defeats the purpose of our knee replacement surgery.
