Younger patients with moderate or severe pain not adequately controlled by 6 months of nonsurgical management and varus malalignment and medial unicompartmental osteoarthritis or osteoarthritis isolated to the one compartment will be considered for High Tibial Osteotomy (HTO).
This procedure has 30% post-operative failure rate at 10 years, does not have published cost effectiveness data and can be technically demanding but it can effectively postpone totally knee replacement.
